NAC and Trainers/Coaches Academy with TMA

HMG collaborates with NAC Breda on the development of football trainers and coaches. Tim Gilissen, the youth training manager, shares insights into this partnership. The traditional sponsorship model often revolves around a monetary contribution in exchange for logo placement. HMG, now We Build Bridges, sought a different approach and asked, "How can we assist?"

"In the football world, the emphasis is usually placed entirely on technical and tactical skills. NOC*NSF demonstrated with a study among Olympic coaches that the profession of trainer/coach also involves leadership and management. In fact, when a trainer fails, it's often due to leadership and coaching aspects. You never hear in the news that the coach lacked football expertise, but rather, it's about the connection with the team that was missing or the collaboration that didn't go well. That's why NAC Breda wants to focus on the non-technical side within the Trainers Academy, which is something completely new in the football world. I believe that as a club, you can't avoid strengthening the overlooked part of the coaching profession in a time that is rapidly changing, where society is becoming more individualistic, and players (but also parents) increasingly need attention."

"As a club that is deeply connected to the community, we feel the responsibility as a large club in the region to help other clubs in their development. If we invest more deeply in the regions, it will ultimately benefit NAC as well. Football connects the whole society. In the locker room, there are all colors, and they are connected by that one round ball."

"Together with HMG, we have developed a program that offers ten regional clubs the opportunity to give something extra to someone they want to reward. Clubs can do this by offering a development program to two of their trainers at HMG."

"The development starts with creating a Talent Motivation Analysis. The profession of a trainer is more than just being on the field and doing exercises. The TMA reveals competencies that are essential in the profession. How good are you, for example, at presenting?"

"When you, as a trainer, give presentations to parents, the way you present in front of the group is crucial. And if presenting doesn't feel right, how can we support you as a trainer?"

Puzzle

"Another example is preparing for training sessions. The degree to which you, as an individual, need order and structure can affect the quality of your preparation and thus the training. Confrontation is also an important topic. In football, at all levels, you deal with doubt, euphoria, disappointment, and joy. Especially in this time when parents are outspoken, every parent feels free to approach the trainer directly. To what extent are you then able to manage a confrontation? Do you feel how the situation is? As a trainer, you will have to deal with all of this, so it's essential to know how your own behavior can influence it. Ultimately, every trainer will work on his own learning question."

"What I find beautiful about this program is that we don't engage in politics. We reach the practice and create immediate impact on the field. We inspire trainers and help them advance personally. HMG's professional project bureau leaves nothing to chance. This adds significant value."

"The NAC Trainers Academy program is recognized by the KNVB, which means that trainers can earn five study points by completing the program satisfactorily. Trainers can use these study points to obtain or renew a coaching license from the KNVB."
